‘The Barry Boswell Fund’ Norfolk U15 Girls Season Report 2014

Girls cricket in Norfolk continues to grow, with a squad of 16 players chosen to represent the county in 2014. Sophie Harrad was chosen as captain and we had high hopes of a successful season under her leadership.

We started on a warm and breezy May afternoon at Narborough where we hosted Lincs on a green damp track. Having been put in Georgina Dunkinson and Aimee Palmer got s off to a good start. Aimee scoring 38. We posted a decent score, but Lincs ran away as worth winners. There was however good bowling from debutants Shannon Spencer and Harriet Bradnock, backed up well by Harriet Lilwall, Emily Grisewood and Aimee Palmer.

We hosted Hunts the next day at home again at Gt Melton, and amassed a great looking 154, Robyn Edge and Aimee Palmer scoring 32 and 64 respectively in a good opening partnership. 3 run outs curtailed a bigger score being set. Jemma Parsons made her debut, and bowled well. Amy Cubitt had a superb day in the field, taking 3 catches and 2 wickets, 2 wickets also for Georgina Dunkinson, and Harriet Lilwall and Shannon Spencer opened their wicket accounts for the season. Again the opposition chased down the total well and we were beaten.

Following a long break in the fixtures, we travelled to play Cambs at Burwell on a very hot day. Flo Allen and Lauren Hemp, back from International football duty for England returned to the side. Great bowling from Flo, Lauren and Shannon, Aimee and Emily saw wickets tumble, and Jemma also taking her first county wicket saw Cambs score a modest 111 from 40 overs. This was backed up with superb fielding, Robyn keeping exceptionally well, and a stunning catch from Georgina too. The total was chased down well, with runs for Aimee Palmer, Flo and a superb 45 from Lauren Hemp saw us grab our first win against a team unbeaten in its previous 3 games.

A long trip to Leics next, and they set 132-4, although gave them 51 rubs as extras, bowling far too many wides! Emma Rogers took a great catch at gully, Robyn taking a smart catch with the gloves, and Hanna Free running around like a gazelle in the field effected a run out, as did Shannon. Beth Harmer joined us from the U13’s and scored 32, with Robyn contributing 24. Sophie Harrad and Jemma batted well in the middle order. However we went from 96-3 to 120-8. Hanna and Georgina batted with superb control and good running and got us to within 3 of the total, before Hanna was bowled. 4 byes next ball saw us win again away from home! Fantastic!

We welcomed neighbours Suffolk in August and scored only 111-7 against the best bowling attack we had faced. Lauren Hemp scored a great 49, with contributions from Hanna, and Emily. Harriet Bradnock looked comfortable batting as did Emma Rogers. We bowled well, especially Jemma and Rebecca Cole without much luck, and Suffolk were aided by too many extras again and won with 5 overs to spare.

Our last game was away at Northants, and after a long car journey, we batted first nd 41 from Robyn ensured we scored a decent 130-7. Aimee Palmer then took 4 wickets for 8 runs as we bowled out the home side for 80, giving us yet another win away from home.

So we finished joint 3rd, winning 3 and losing 3. Superb effort from the girls, some great performances, so nervous moments, but some very proud moments for me too and the parents.
