ZipLeague Round-Up 2015

ZipLeague Round-Up 2015

Zipleague roundup 2015

With ten entries this year, the fourth season of the U13 indoor cricket zipeague hosted at Hethersett Old Hall School underlined the growing popularity of the indoor game; its short format with matches only lasting one hour and an absence of weather postponements finding favour among many clubs.

Teams were placed into two groups with the leading pair progressing to the Super 4s Winners’ League. Group A was extremely competitive including title holders Gt.Melton, who had won all three previous competitions, Gt.Ellingham, Hethersett & Tas Valley and Mulbarton. Cringleford Lodge were the new boys and although not progressing to the second round set a new league record when their first pair added 88 against Mulbarton’s very young side. No team won all of their games here and with Tas scoring a surprise win over Melton but losing heavily to Ellingham, the top two places were decided on batting and bowling points and in the end it was Ellingham and Melton who went through with Tas narrowly missing out.

The situation was much clearer in Group B with both seeds, Garboldisham and Topcroft, progressing without too much difficulty to the final round. In a return to form, Garboldisham won all four of their games, the only team to do so in the first round, while Topcroft’s young team produced a spirited performance in securing the second promotion spot. Rocklands finished third sharing the only tie of the year with Old Buckenham. The newbies in this group were Ashwellthorpe Nomads who lost only by single figures to both Topcroft and Old Buckenham; a determined performance in their first season.

With six teams eliminated, the final four took on each other in three further games. In the first fixtures Ellingham ran out comfortable winners against Topcroft while Melton ended Garboldisham’s unbeaten run. Topcroft bounced back in round two as Garboldisham lost again and in a thrilling finish Ellingham overcame Melton in the final over. On the final Monday it was Ellingham’s to lose and with Melton piling on the pressure in game one with a solid win over Topcroft, Ellingham’s versus Garboldisham became a must win contest. But it all went horribly wrong as Ellingham’s innings imploded midway leaving them well short of a decent total. Not to be denied though, Ellingham bounced back and in an exciting conclusion to the league scraped through by the narrowest of margins to become the 2014/15 champions.

This was a worthy contest to finish the tournament. Congratulations go to Gt.Ellingham and runners up Gt.Melton. Topcroft finished third and Garboldisham fourth. Full match reports, results and pictures can found on the website.
