ECB Girls Kwik Cricket County Finals Report 2015

A beautiful sunny morning greeted the 8 teams who had made it through to the County Finals for the Girls Kwik Cricket competition in Norfolk. The finals were part of the Sainsburys School Games and winners had qualified from School Games Partnership Finals.

The day began with the teams playing in 2 groups of 4 teams. Each team played the other in their group once, with the top two teams progressing to the afternoon knockout stages. The teams finishing 3rd and 4th would drop in to the Plate Competition.

Some strong early performances were on show from Holt, who won a thrilling opening game v Attleborough, Stoke Holy Cross and Martham. Hempnall were performing above expectations as were Fairhaven in a keenly contensted morning of play.

Holt were convincing winners of Group 1, scoring over 300 twice, with Hempnall the surprise runners up and also progressing. Stoke Holy Cross produced three solid performances to win their group, with Martham also going through.

In the afternoon the competition progressed to the knockout stages. Holt and Stoke Holy Cross were comfortable winners of their Semi Finals v Martham and Hempnall respectively. In the Plate competition a tight game saw Fairhaven beat Eaton by 8 runs, with Attleborough also going through to the Plate Final. In that final Fairhaven deservedly claimed the silverware with a 51 run win over Attleborough.

The final would be played with the two best teams in the competition. Stok Holy Cross posted a creditable and competitive 258-3. The powerful Holt batting line up were always in the chase but the pressure finally told in the penultimate over with two wickets that put Stoke in a commanding position. Holt were unable to chase down the total and fell 20 runs short giving Stoke Holy Cross their first ever Kwik Cricket Title, and the Graeme Wilton Trophy.

Stoke Holy Cross will represent Norfolk at the Regional Finals at Bishops Stortford on 8th July.

Thanks got to all teams and players, the teachers, plus all the umpires and coaches present on the day and of course Old Buckenham CC for the use of their excellent ground. Thanks also to all School Games staf who had worked so hard to run all the various events across the county leading to these finals.
