Norfolk Winner 2015 - Jack Southgate (Dersingham Cricket Club)

Loughborough - ECB National Performance Centre

Jack was rewarded with a day out at the ECB National Performance Centre to collect his award. The day included a tour of the venue which is used regularly by all the ECB teams including both the men and women teams. Special coaching masterclass sessions were put on by lead ECB coaches including Graham Thorpe (Batting), Kevin Shine (Bowling), Peter Such (Spin Bowling) & Chris Taylor (Fielding) which gave all the nominees an insight into elite level coaching. Jack can be seen recieving his winners certificate from ex England spin bowler Peter Such.

Why Jack?

Jack is a coach at Dersingham CC in the West of Norfolk and has made a significant impact at the club in a range of ways.

I was fortunate enough to conduct Dersingham CC’s first Clubmark inspection in 2013 and was immediately impressed at the Site Visit by the enthusiasm, organisation and skill that Jack showed (on a very cold evening!) getting some great sessions planned and organised. The children responded really well to his style of coaching and clearly they had a lot of fun.

Jack has led the programme at Dersingham CC now since qualifying as a Level 2 coach in 2013 and the NCB have been keen to support him and the club to develop as the club are located in an area where cricket clubs have struggled of late. This is a new youth section and Jack and his support team have done a good job in getting this off the ground which as we all know is a very tough task.

In 2014 the NCB invited the club to join the Chance to Shine programme, and Jack has successfully led the club in to this new venture delivering around 60 hours of coaching in Year 1. Some of the feedback on Jack’s coaching from the schools involved has been excellent and the club are already seeing the benefit of more children joining them in their club youth section. This has been achieved by delivering fun and enjoyable sessions that the children want to return to again and again.

In 2015 NCB offered Dersingham 100 hours of coaching and this increase is a reflection of NCB’s confidence in Jack’s coaching ability as well as the club’s ability to deliver.

Jack has also set up a small coaching business offering cricket coaching year round to schools and other clubs.
