Norfolk U11 vs Hertfordshire U11 - Sunday 5th June 2016 - Brooke CC

Norfolk Won By 4 Wickets

Hertfordshire U11
- 112 All Out
SPIRE Norwich Hospital Norfolk U11 - 113/6

Herts batted first, reaching 112 all out, with the final wicket falling in the 40th over. We have set clear targets for the boys regarding wides, no balls and byes, which against Notts contributed to our defeat. Today our boys bowled with discipline, accuracy and to a clear plan, which was well communicated by Captain Jayden Borges.

Charlie Hood kept wicket very well, and was supported by the fielders throughout the 40 overs. Our catching was very good, and ground fielding tidy.

Our opening bowlers of Ben Panter and Ethan Metcalf bowled very well, returning figures of 7-2-180 and 6-1-12-3. Ben bowling the 4th stump channel, and Ethan bowling very straight. William Utting bowled nicely, with good control and spin. Max Brister bowled with lots of energy, and deserved his wicket. Freddie Royall bowled in the middle overs and with good pace and control, returning figures of 7-1-11-1. Lucas Triffitt bowled very nicely, swinging the ball away and giving nothing to the batsmen, only going for 5 runs off his 3 overs. Sam Hyatt and James Cross each bowled an over of well-directed, controlled medium pace. Jake Reynolds bowled well, swinging the ball away and at good pace.

However the star of the show with the ball was our Captain, Jayden Borges. With remarkable figures of 7-6-1-4, Jayden bowled with superb control and variation, and made scoring very difficult, taking wickets at regular intervals. Charlie’s keeping to Jayden was very impressive.

At the interval, we were very pleased to restrict a strong Herts side to 112, but we knew only half the job was done, and we needed to bat very well. James Cross and Reuben Hollis opened the batting, and with the Herts opening bowlers bowling quickly and straight, scoring was proving difficult from the first over. The Herts bowler from the Pavilion end was particularly strong, bowling quickly and swinging the ball into the right hander. James was bowled which brought our fluent left hander, Ethan Metcalf to the crease. Ethan was looking comfortable until he played the ball straight back to the bowler, caught and bowled, to bring Charlie Hood to the wicket, only to be very well caught in the gully. With Reuben following LBW, we were in a spot of bother at 10-4 off 7 overs!

This brought Jayden Borges and Ben Panter to the crease, who steadily started to rebuild the innings. They occupied the crease, picked up singles where they could, and put the bad ball away. When Ben was bowled for a very well-made 30, the score was on 95; a very good partnership which started in difficult circumstances, and showed real bottle from Ben and Jayden.

Freddie Royall came in at no.7 to support Jayden, who went on to complete his 50 in some style, with powerful shots around the park. Jayden was eventually caught at long-on, with Sam Hyatt joining Freddie to finish the job. Freddie playing a glorious cover drive over the top for four to complete the win. This was a very impressive team performance, and will give the boys confidence ahead of our next match, away to Northamptonshire next Sunday.

Herts are clearly a very strong side with some very talented cricketers, and were a pleasure to play against. We wish them the very best for the rest of the season.

Many thanks to the parents who helped with teas and scoring, and to Brooke Cricket Club for hosting the match and looking after us all so well.
