Final Report

Old Buckenham Ladies have been crowned 2016 League Champions after beating Topcroft Ladies by 10 wickets at Hethersett & Tas Valley Cricket Club.

The result meant that Topcroft have now finished runners-up for a 2nd consecutive season in this competition.

Old Buckenham Ladies struck in the first over as Eleanor Pringle had opener Rachel Chettleborough caught behind by Charlotte Smith. Fellow opening bowler Daisy Eke (3 overs - 1 for 5) then had Topcroft Captain Sara Worley caught at point by Emily Heuschneider. When Holly Marchant (2 overs – 1 for 8) had Maureen Ellis caught by Olivia Olpin, whilst Jade Hoyte bowled 2 maiden overs at the other end, Topcroft were only 13 for 3 off 9 overs due to fine captaincy & field placement by captain Hanna Free. The introduction of the spin attack of Heuchsneider (3 overs – 2 for 7) & Olpin (3 overs – 2 maidens for 2 runs) maintained the momentum as the Free took 2 catches for Heuschneider & a run out by Heuchsneider reduced Topcroft to 28 for 6. Only Sarah Banns at no 4 held out with a fine 12 not out. Megan Newbery (2 overs for 6) & Sam Williamson (2 overs – 1 for 6) took over the bowling duties & the cousins, Marchant & Williamson, had Karen Reeder caught. Eleanor Pringle (3 overs – 2 for 6) returned for her final over & caught & bowled an attacking Ellie Lyon.

Old Buckenham set about the reply in attacking style from the start as Georgie Dunkinson 5 not out anchoring the flamboyant Jade Hoyte 26 not out, who hit the only 5 boundaries of the match saw OB home by 10 wickets in 6.2 overs. Whilst the result may seem one-sided Topcroft gave it their all throughout and were worthy finalists for a 2nd consecutive year.

Captain Hanna Free received the Norfolk Ladies League Cup (sponsored by Thetford Grammar School) from Martin Walker (representing the Norfolk Cricket Board). The NCB would like to congratulate both teams for reaching the final by winning their respective leagues and in particular Old Buckenham for winning the league in their first season of senior ladies’ cricket. A special mention must go to Hethersett & Tas Valley CC who hosted the game at short notice to ensure the match was played.
