Full Report 2016 - Young Norfolk Cricketers Celebrate Success

321 People packed into the Mercure Hotel, Norwich for the annual award presentation to celebrate Norfolk’s finest young cricketers.

The annual dinner brings players, parents, managers, coaches, staff and invited guests together to reflect on the season for each team and then finishes with the prestigious end of season awards.

Norfolk run 9 County Age Group teams with 6 boy’s teams from U10 through to U17 and 2 girl’s teams at U13’s and U15’s. An U17's Girls team will be reintroduced for the upcoming 2017 season.

Compares for the evening were Neil Taylor, Chris Brown and Steve Goldsmith who kept the evening on track. Background music, walk-on music and award music was used for the first time and this really added to the evening creating a nice atmosphere for all involved.

The programme for the evening followed the traditional pattern with two rounds of heads and tails either side of the main course and dessert. Each CAG manager/coach then came up to the stage to give their end of season report.

The awards for the 2016 season began with the County Cap presentations for each individual age-group which are presented to select players for consistent high performances which contribute to winning matches. Individual awards then followed for hundreds and five-wicket hauls.

The first on the main awards was the Derek Cousins Memorial Shield which is a new award in memory of Derek (Former NCB Tresurer & lifelong supporter of Norfolk Youth Cricket) who sadly passed away late last year. The inaugural award was presented by NCB Chairman Keir Hounsome to CAG Chairman Neil Taylor to commemorate his long standing service and commitment towards Norfolk Youth Cricket.

The next award was the Derek Cousins Performance of The Year trophy and was presented by Chris Brown to Norfolk U17 player Nathan Thurston for his match winning figures of 6-70 vs Hertfordshire U17.

The third award was the Friends of Norfolk Youth Cricket Girls Player of The Season and was presented to Holly Marchant of the Norfolk Girls U13 team by Mel Taylor. Holly had an outstanding season, leading run scorer and wicket taker for her age-group. This also meant she finished top of the ECB U13 stats for her bowling and 6th for her batting.

The fourth and final award is The Louis Brooks Trophy and is the most prestigious award that any young Norfolk cricketer can win and previous some of the winners include Jaik Mickleburgh, Rob Newton, Olly Stone and Callum Taylor who are all currently playing first-class cricket at their respective counties. The Trophy is awarded in memory of Louis Brooks who was a very promising young cricketer in Norfolk and played a key role in club and Norfolk youth cricket at U10’s through to U17’s. Louis sadly lost his battle to cancer aged just 19 in 2005 and this trophy has been awarded in his memory ever since.

This year, the trophy was presented by Louis’s brother … to Hudson De Lucchi of the Norfolk U15’s and U17’s who had an exceptional season with both the bat and ball at each age group. Hudson scored 724 runs and took 15 wickets across both teams during the 2016 season. He narrowly missed out on selection for the London & East Bunbury team but he made his Norfolk Lions debut and played for Vauxhall Mallards in the East Anglian Premier League.
