Full Report 2017 - Young Norfolk Cricketers Celebrate Success

310 People packed into the Mercure Hotel, Norwich for the annual award presentation to celebrate Norfolk’s finest young cricketers.

The annual dinner brings players, parents, managers, coaches, staff and invited guests together to reflect on the season for each team and then finishes with the prestigious end of season awards.

Norfolk run 10 County Age Group teams with 6 boy’s teams from U10 through to U17 and 3 girl’s teams at U13’s, U15’s and U17’s which returned during the 2017 season.

Compares for the evening were Neil Taylor, Chris Brown, Tom Davies and Kevin Denmark who kept the evening on track. Background music was used during the meal creating a nice atmosphere for all involved and an improved PA System was used for the speeches/presentations which was well received by everyone involved.

The programme for the evening followed the traditional pattern with two rounds of heads and tails either side of the main course and dessert. Each CAG manager/coach then came up to the stage to give their end of season report.

The awards for the 2017 season began with the Individual awards for hundreds and five-wicket hauls. Following this, the County Cap presentations for each individual age-group were presented to select players for consistent high performances which contribute to winning matches.

The first on the main awards was the Derek Cousins Memorial Shield which is an award in memory of Derek (Former NCB Treasurer & lifelong supporter of Norfolk Youth Cricket) who sadly passed away late 2015. The 2017 award was presented by NYC Chairman Neil Taylor to Mike Banham to commemorate his long standing service and commitment towards Norfolk Youth Cricket.

The next award was the Derek Cousins Performance of The Year trophy and was presented by Chris Brown to Norfolk U13 player Freddie Fairey for his 124 for Norfolk U14 vs Surrey U14 whilst playing a year above his normal age-group.

The third award was the Friends of Norfolk Youth Cricket Girls Player of The Season and was presented to Robyn Edge of the Norfolk Girls U17’s by Tom Davies. Robyn had an outstanding season with the bat for her age-group including a top score of 108 vs Suffolk. Her performances helped the Norfolk Girls U17 finish top of their ECB league.

The fourth and final award is The Louis Brooks Trophy and is the most prestigious award that any young Norfolk cricketer can win and previous some of the winners include Jaik Mickleburgh, Rob Newton, Olly Stone and Callum Taylor who are all currently playing first-class cricket at their respective counties. The Trophy is awarded in memory of Louis Brooks who was a very promising young cricketer in Norfolk and played a key role in club and Norfolk youth cricket at U10’s through to U17’s. Louis sadly lost his battle to cancer aged just 19 in 2005 and this trophy has been awarded in his memory ever since.

This year, the trophy was presented by Louis’s father (Ross) and two brothers to Callum Metcalf of the Norfolk U15’s and U17’s. Whilst Callum did not stand out with outstanding stats with his two Norfolk CAG teams he did manage to take 5-10 including a hat-trick against Guernsey whilst on tour with the Norfolk U15. Callum’s commitments to the Norfolk teams in 2017 were limited as he was selected for the London & East Bunbury team. During the 2017 season, he also made his Norfolk Lions debut and played for Horsford in the East Anglian Premier League.
