Norfolk U10 vs Buckinghamshire U10 - Sunday 20th May 2018 - Swardeston CC (Hilltops)

NORFOLK WON BY 6 WICKETS

Buckinghamshire U10 - 133AO from 32 overs
XX Cricket Norfolk U10 - 134/4 from 29 overs

The sun was out for the U10’s first match of the season and all involved were extremely excited at the prospect of playing on the Common at Swardeston. Buckinghamshire won the toss and decided to bat giving our opening bowling partnership of William Panter (6-1-8-1) and Bertie Case (5-0-17-2) their first chance to work as a team with the new ball. They did not waste this opportunity picking up 3 quick wickets with a particularly athletic caught and bowled from Bertie.

Our first change bowlers Billy Keeler (3-0-8-2) and Oliver Ford (3-0-12-0) kept the pressure on the Buck’s batsmen. Billy bowled straight lines picking up two well-earned wickets before Captain Harry Thomas (4-0-16-0) decided to turn to the spin option of himself and Arthur Butterworth (5-0-17-3). The Buckinghamshire batsmen struggled to deal with the spin and proceeded to provide a number of catching chances that the Norfolk fielders failed to hold on to until William Broad took a great catch off Arthur at gully.

The Visitors found themselves running out of wickets at 84-6 of 22 overs but they started to fight back with a solid 7th wicket partnership. Edward Lewis (3-1-13-1) picked up the wicket of A Foulds (15) with some nice off spin, whilst William Broad (3-0-15-1) took his first wicket for the county.

Norfolk had let a very strong position start to slide as the Bucks batsmen pressurized the fielders taking regular quick singles. Extras began to prove an issue with Norfolk conceding 59 runs in byes, wides and no balls. With Buckinghamshire building up to a competitive total, Norfolk turned to the leg spin of Arthur who quickly took the wickets of M Hodges (12) and J Iseton (11).

Buckinghamshire CC U10 133 all out (30 Overs).

Norfolk’s reply was immediately under pressure from a great opening spell of spin from T.Arachchige (4-2-11-2). He soon accounted for openers Rikin Kumar and JC Malherbe (5) with the boys finding themselves 11 for 3 in the first 6 overs. This brought to the crease Oliver Ford (41 not out) and Harry Thomas (30) who steadied the ship and began to build a solid partnership. At drinks the boys had added 60 runs and were turning the tide in favour of the home side before Thomas was bowled for 30. Arthur Butterworth (35 not out) was not in the mood to hang around and was soon pushing the score on. The boys started to find the boundary on a regular basis and soon knocked off the final 69 runs in 9 overs.

Norfolk CC U10 134 – 4 (28 Overs). Win by 7 wickets.

This was a positive start by the team. They will need to keep the extras down and improve their catching as the season progresses, but they have shown huge promise as a unit.

Nottinghamshire U10 vs Norfolk U10 vs - Wednesday 30th May 2018 - Notts Unity Casuals

NORFOLK WON BY 3 WICKETS

Nottinghamshire U10 - 91/8 from 32 overs
XX Cricket Norfolk U10 - 92/7 from 29.3 overs

As the team made the long journey to Nottingham the grey skies and persistent rain painted a bleak picture for the day. Fortunately the groundsman had covered the pitch and was keen to get the game on. As the teams arrived the rain stopped and after a slightly delayed start we began a reduced game of 32 overs.

Notts won the toss and decided to bat. Tea towels were borrowed and the boys came up with a plan to keep the ball dry in difficult conditions. Will Panter (5-1-12-1) and Bertie Case (5-0-4-2) produced excellent opening spells. Bertie bowled a beautiful line and soon had both openers walking back to the pavilion. The pressure the opening bowlers were building forced the batsmen to take a risky run and Archie Chipperfield brilliantly hit the stumps from point. William was bowling fast and nasty, producing a peach to bowl Nott’s 4th batsman for 0.

Dominic Walker (4-0-12-0) on debut for Norfolk was our first change bowler and along with Arthur Butterworth (4-2-2-0) gave Notts little to score off with a very tight spell. Kieran Cook (2-0-6-0) and Harry Thomas (4-0-11-2) continued the good work with Harry bowling two of the Notts players with some lovely left arm off spin. Notts tried to push the score on but Archie Chipperfield (3-0-9-1) and James Adcock (5-0-10-1) both picked up their first wickets for the County and helped restrict Notts to 91 off their 32 overs.

Nottingham CC U10 91 - 7 (32 Overs).

The Norfolk opening pair showed real character facing some very fast bowling off a 16.5-yard pitch. JC Malherbe (30) batted beautifully, dispatching anything short to the boundary with great timing and poise. He was ably backed up by Rikin Kumar (2) whose runs do not reflect what a good job he did at the top of the order to see off their opening bowlers. Unfortunately both openers were out in quick succession and the score went from 52-0 to 60-3. Arthur Butterworth (9) and James Adcock (10) worked hard to steady the innings but runs were proving very difficult to score. Notts had ringed the field and although the boys were hitting some great shots they struggled to find gaps and showed a reluctance to take on the fielders with quick singles. They moved the score on to 88 before they were both out trying to hit the winning runs. Reilly Borges had a quick cameo before being run out and Archie Chipperfield came to the crease to hit the winning runs.

Norfolk CC U10 93 – 7 (29 Overs). Win by 4 wickets.

This was a great win for the boys against a 1st Class County in difficult conditions. Again extras were an issue, accounting for half of Nott’s score, but the team is improving with every match and should be proud of today’s effort.

Huntingdonshire U10 vs Norfolk U10 vs - Sunday 17th June 2018 - Eaton Socon CC

NORFOLK WON BY 111 RUNS

XX Cricket Norfolk U10 - 217/7 from 35 overs
Huntingdonshire U10 - 106AO from 22 overs

The Norfolk U10’s continued their strong start to the season with a convincing win away to Huntingdonshire. The hosts won the toss and put Norfolk into bat giving the boys their first chance to set a total this season.

In recent weeks many of the boys have been playing short format festival cricket, which requires players to score quickly. This showed with the first three batsmen being run out in quick succession. Both JC Malherbe (27) and Ollie Ford (11) looked in fine form before a mixture of good fielding and poor running had them back in the pavilion. Harry Thomas (10) was going along nicely until being bowled in the first over after drinks leaving the Norfolk boys 69-5 off 17 overs.

Arthur Butterworth (50 not out) set about rebuilding the Norfolk innings with good support from William Broad (11) and Edward Lewis (16). Edwards’s dismissal brought William Panter (32 not out) to the crease and he formed a match winning partnership with Arthur. Both batsmen started to find the boundary on a regular basis with some excellent clean hitting. It was a pleasure to watch the boys’ partnership and Arthur should be proud of scoring his maiden county 50 at such a young age.

Norfolk CC U10 217 – 7 (35 Overs)

Huntingdonshire’s inning was immediately under pressure as W Panter (2-1-1-0) and Bertie Case (5-0-3-24) soon found their lines with some excellent bowling. They were backed up by a great spell from Fergus Robb (5-1-0-14) who was unlucky not to pick up any wickets. With Huntingdonshire on 52-4, captain Harry Thomas turned to Edward Lewis (3-0-2-16) and Oliver Ford (3-0-3-5) who soon brought the Huntingdonshire inning to an end. The mixture of seam and off spin was too good for the tail, resulting in a convincing win for Norfolk. Reilly Borges and Billy Keeler should be commended on their improving performances behind the stumps.

Huntingdonshire CC U10 – 106 all out (22 overs)

Cambridgeshire U10 vs Norfolk U10 vs - Sunday 24th June 2018 - Dry Drayton

CAMBRIDGESHIRE WON BY 9 RUNS

Huntingdonshire U10 - 103AO from 31 overs
XX Cricket Norfolk U10 - 94AO from 27 overs

For those parents who travelled to this game I can only apologise for what turned out to be the worst game of cricket I have ever seen. The pitch was not fit to play any form of match and sadly the boys took little from the day.

Cambridge set a total of 103. The pick of the bowlers were Arthur Butterworth (7-2-2-11), Archie Chipperfield (4-1-2-4) and Dominic Walker (3-0-2-18)

The Norfolk response started well with JC Malherbe (12), Kieran Cook (10), Oliver Ford (17) and Harry Thomas (15) battling well in truly difficult conditions but all were undone by the ridiculous bounce. As the pitch deteriorated along with the boys’ confidence, the last 7 wickets were lost in 9 overs with Norfolk all out for 94.
