The 2nd Norfolk Over 40’s Finals day was hosted by Hethersett & Tas Valley for a 2nd consecutive year at their picturesque ground which has excellent facilities including 2 pitches.

The day saw the 3 league winners (Bircham, Sheringham & Tivetshall) and the best runner-up (Drayton) come together to play in a 4-way finals day with two semi-finals followed by a final and a 3rd/4th play play-off.

The first two semi-finals were both one-sided with Bircham comfortably beating Drayton on the top pitch by 7 wickets with 11 balls to space. The second pitch entertained Tivetshall and Sheringham with the seasiders winning by 8 wickets with 6 over left in the innings to reach the final.

This meant the 3rd/4th place play off on the second pitch would entertain both Sheringham and Drayton who had already met twice in the league stages of the competition in 2018 with Sheringham winning the league by a few points. The match came down to the final ball with Drayton requiring 4 to win with 4 wickets in hand. Unfortunately for Drayton, they could only scramble a single and Sheringham came out winners by 2 runs to finish the day in 3rd place.

In the final on the top pitch, 2017 champions took on South Norfolk Over 40’s Champions Tivetshall who finished in 3rd place at the 2017 finals day. Tivetshall batted first and set a very competitive 145/5 from their allotted 20 overs with 3 of their players retiring their innings on 30 runs. (Weedon, Spence & Farrant) The pick of the bowlers were Steeles, Slegg and Le Fleming who all took wickets and conceded less than a run a ball from their 4 overs.

The Bircham reply got off to a great start with King & Case scoring quickly. However, once Case retired his innings, 3 quick wickets fell including the wicket of King for 25 which left Tivetshall in the box seat at the halfway point of the innings.

However, a great partnership between Steeles who hit 3 towering sixes and captain Humphrey put Bircham back in control. When they both retired on 30, Bircham only needed a run a ball for the last three overs. Tivetshall did not want to lay down easily and some tight bowling along with some exceptional fielding meant that 6 were needed for the final over. An early boundary eased the pressure and Bircham scrambled home with 3 balls to spare to win back to back titles.
