Over 300 people packed into the Mercure Hotel, Norwich for the annual Norfolk Youth Cricket dinner and award presentation evening on Friday. (21st September) The evening brought together Norfolk’s finest young cricketers, parents, coaches, sponsors and invited guests to celebrate the 2018 summer season.

Norfolk run 10 County Age Group teams with 7 boy’s teams from U10 through to U17 and 3 girl’s teams at U13’s, U15’s and U17’s. Compares for the evening were ex Norfolk Captain & Norfolk Performance Manager Chris Brown and ex Derbyshire & Norfolk player Steve Goldsmith.

The awards for the 2018 season began with the Individual awards for hundreds and five-wicket hauls. Following this, the County Cap presentations for each individual age-group were presented to select players for consistent high performances which contribute to winning matches.

The first on the main awards was the Derek Cousins Memorial Shield. The 2018 award was presented by Chris Brown to Alison Williams for her long-standing contribution to Norfolk Youth Cricket.

The next award was the Derek Cousins Performance of The Year trophy and was presented by Chris Brown to Norfolk U13 player Ben Panter who took 6 wickets for 36 runs against Lancashire on tour.

The third award was the Friends of Norfolk Youth Cricket Girls Player of the Season and was presented to Tilly Butterworth of the Norfolk Girls U13’s by Mel Taylor for her consistent performances during the 2018 season.

A new award was presented for the first time in 2018, the Maurice Sills Memorial Trophy which is to be presented to the Boys Player of the Season each year. The 2018 winner of this award was Arthur Wilcox of the Norfolk Boys U12’s.

The fourth and final award is The Louis Brooks Trophy and is the most prestigious award that any young Norfolk cricketer can win and previous some of the winners include Jaik Mickleburgh, Rob Newton & Olly Stone who are all currently playing first-class cricket at their respective counties. The Trophy is awarded in memory of Louis Brooks who was a very promising young cricketer in Norfolk and played a key role in club and Norfolk during his short career. Louis sadly lost his battle to cancer aged just 19 in 2005 and this trophy has been awarded in his memory ever since.

This year, the trophy was presented by Louis’s father (Ross) to Harry Williams of the boys U17’s. Harry had an outstanding summer scoring over 500 runs at an average of 65 including 100’s against Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire. Harry also played in the East Anglian Premier league for Vauxhall Mallards during the 2018 summer.
