Y6 Mixed County Kwik Cricket Final

Horsford CC, Monday June 28th 2010

Once again the County Finals for the ASDA Y6 Mixed Kwik Cricket Competition in Norfolk were held at Horsford CC, the County Ground, and once again the weather was extremely kind, with hot and sunny conditions greeting the teams as they arrived.

16 teams representing all 8 School Sports Partnerships across Norfolk had qualified for the County Finals through their own local festivals and competitions. This alone was a fantastic achievement, reaching the last 16 of a competition that had a total of around 170 schools taking part in the county. The two finalists on the day would take the honour of representing Norfolk at the Regional Finals to be held at Mildenhall CC on 8th July.

The teams were split in to four groups, and played off against all teams in their group during the morning. The top two teams in each group would qualify for the knockout stages in the afternoon. The cricket on show was of a very high quality, with Robert Kett, Mundesley and Corpusty all looking strong, winning their group with a 100% record. St Mary’s (Long Stratton) also qualified from a tight group as group winners. The runners up in the group stages were St Martha’s (Kings Lynn), Holt, North Walsham and Taverham all of whom also qualified for the quarter finals. The full results of the group stages can be downloaded below in pdf format.

All the teams eliminated at the halfway stage were presented with commemorative certificates, and a special ‘Spirit of Cricket’ Award of a signed World T20 bat was made to Caister.

The afternoon saw the competition move in to the critical stages, and the quarter finals saw some extraordinary drama and close games. In a real turn up for the books, all the teams who won their groups were knocked out in the quarter finals, meaning that the Semi Final line up was Holt, St Martha’s, Taverham and North Walsham.

The semi finals saw convincing wins for St Martha’s and North Walsham, meaning that those two schools had booked their place in the Regional Finals. However there was the small matter of who would be crowned County Champions, with neither school having won the trophy before. St. Martha’s made a commanding total of 290 without losing a wicket, and North Walsham were unable to threaten that total in the face of some tight bowling and inspired fielding, finishing 49 runs short on 241-4. The game was played in an excellent spirit and both teams deserve enormous credit for their efforts on such a long hot day. St Martha’s however collected the trophy for the first time, and move forward to Mildenhall as County Champions. There was also a ‘player of the match’ award of a brand new hard cricket ball, which went to Edinas of St Martha’s.

Holt were the winners of the 3rd place play-off against Taverham.

This was another fantastic day of Kwik Cricket, with some real enjoyment and ability being shown by all teams. We hope that many of the players will go on to play for their local clubs.

  • Horsford CC
  • All 8 School Sports Partnerships
  • The Norfolk Competition Team
  • All volunteers on the day who assisted with umpiring, scoring and administrating.
  • ASDA, who supplied the refreshments.
