Match Reports

Norfolk Girls U15’s V Cambridgeshire Girls U15’s

Norfolk got off to a great start to the match when Bryony Lund and Charlie Redhead opened the batting, Lund scoring 27 and Redhead scoring 12. Good bowling and fielding saw Norfolk lose a couple of wickets. However, Sarah McGahan and Frankie Walder stepped up to bat and did so very convincingly, resulting in a 66 partnership; McGahan 29 and Walder 20. Amy Bell and Lydia Raven completed the innings and took the score to a solid total of 148.
Cambridgeshire lost two early wickets, reflecting the tight bowling and energetic fielding of Norfolk. Naomi Littlewood (1-7) clean bowled one opener and the other was run out after fine fielding from Emily Watts. Young debutant Amy Pape bowled consistently well as did Emily Reay and Charlotte Vaughan. There was good cricket from both teams as Cambridge tried to chase the runs, but were denied by Norfolk’s excellent fielding with Littlewood running out one batter with a direct throw. Watts (1-12) took a well deserved wicket as did Lydia Raven (1-11).
Norfolk won by 12 runs, Norfolk 148 – 7 and Cambridgeshire 136-5.

Norfolk 170 - 5 Suffolk 132 all out (35 0ver game)

Norfolk continued their winning ways with an excellent win against Suffolk. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Norfolk stormed to 30 in the first 3 overs with Amy Bell and Charlie Redhead in dynamic form. Both fell in quick succession along with a 3rd wicket before Morgan Burt and Sarah McGahan steadied the innings with a partnership of 48. McGahan finally went for 19 bringing Frankie Walder to the wicket who with Burt put on a further 83 runs, Walder finishing with 25 and Burt not out for an excellent 41.
Suffolk started strongly but fine bowling from Gabby Snowling (2-15) got her 2 wickets, one a fine catch by keeper Brittany Barber. Lydia Raven bowled tightly and was unlucky not to get a wicket. The 2 youngsters, Megan Hogg and Emily Reay also bowled well with Reay picking up a wicket. A brief recovery from Suffolk was ended by excellent bowling from Emily Watts (1-8) and an outstanding catch from Bell. But it was star performer Burt who won the game with an inspired spell of 3-12. The innings was wrapped up by a Walder initiated run out and she went on to take the final wicket.
Player of the match - Morgan Burt

Norfolk v Suffolk

Norfolk U15 Girls continued their unbeaten season with a comprehensive win over Suffolk at Old Buckenham Cricket Club. In a 35 over game Norfolk stormed to an impressive 258 - 2.
Amy Bell started the 7 runs per over rate with a quick fire 14. Charlie Redhead was then joined by captain Naomi Littlewood in a partnership of 130, with both players reaching their fifties. Naomi retired at 60 having scored 14 runs off the last over she faced, including a 6 off her last ball. Charlie reached her fifty a little later before retiring. Momentum was then maintained by Morgan Burt (35) and Frankie Walder (35 n.o.) who kept the run rate at 7 an over, putting on a further 80 runs. In the last over Amy Pape joined Frankie at the wicket and scored her first run for the County.
Suffolk struggled in reply with Gabby Snowling clean bowling both openers and Emily Reay and Lydia Raven bowling tightly before Naomi took 3 wickets in 3 overs for just one run. Amy Pape bowled exceptionally well, taking 3 - 14 and there were also wickets for Emily Watts and Megan Hogg. The bowlers were backed up with some energetic and positive fielding which capped off an all round great performance.

Victory after Three Years!

Norfolk Ladies played host to Hertfordshire Ladies in the London and East Division 5 of the County Championship on Sunday 18th May. Having not beaten their opponents since 2005, the team were keen to change the statistics.
Winning the toss and electing to bat, Norfolk got off to a shaky start after opener Smith was out first ball - the same as her male counterpart Rogers. Nethersell (25) and Tirimanna(25) then steadied the ship as they put on 42. Holl added 27 before getting bowled by the Herts captain. Wickets fell at regular intervals as the home side pushed to add to the total. Dyer and Grove put on 17 for the final wicket for Norfolk to finish on 118 from 48.1 overs.
Herts started strongly but failed to build partnerships as they stuttered to 95-9 of their 50 overs, Nethersell, Littlewood and Thompson all picking up two wickets a piece with Peatfield claiming two catches.

An excellent team performance which fully deserved the victory. Norfolk next play Leicestershire in a friendly on 1st June at Acle CC followed by their next league game against Suffolk on 8th June.
You can see the full scorecard on our Play-Cricket site.

Another Win!

Acle CC was the setting as Norfolk Ladies entertained Leicestershire in a 50 over friendly. It was the first time the club had hosted a ladies county game and in the process witnessed a commanding performance from the home side.
Winning the toss and electing to bat, Norfolk got off to a slow start but eventually the runs started to flow as Smith (22) and Nethersell (23) built a second wicket partnership. The middle order then had a minor collapse before Littlewood (23) and Cadge (24*) steadied the innings with a seventh wicket stand of 48. Norfolk finished their 50 overs on 145-7.

Despite starting off at a rapid reply, Leicestershire always looked likely to struggle as only two batsmen reached double figures. Wickets fell at regular intervals for the visitors as Norfolk's bowling attack and fielding was as strong as in their previous victory against Herts. Leicestershire was bowled out for 78 with Littlewood, Holl and Nethersell all picking up two wickets.
It was an encouraging performance from the ladies as they look to continue their undefeated season with another win on Sunday at Suffolk (Ipswich CC, Copdock 11am) in the London and East Division 5 in the County Championships.

A minor setback...

Norfolk Ladies suffered a minor setback when their LV London and East Division 5 match of the County Championship away to Suffolk was cancelled due to poor weather. The team having previously played Herts in the league and Leicestershire in a friendly are currently undefeated this season and were looking to extend their lead at the top of the division. The other game in the division, along with all the other county matches in the league, was played as Herts defeated Wiltshire comfortably.
With only a disappointing 10 points being awarded to both teams, the result still leaves Norfolk top of the table with 30 points closely followed by Herts (24), Wiltshire (20) with Suffolk (10) propping up the table. Norfolk travel to Wiltshire in July knowing that a win is essential to guarantee a place in the play offs at Taunton in August. Table:

Norfolk Ladies reach Play-offs!

Norfolk Ladies stormed to the LV County Championships Division 5 Play-Offs after a very commanding victory away to Wiltshire, playing at Purton CC. Two changes were made from the last game due to injury and unavailability allowing Bryony Lund to make her senior county debut.
Norfolk captain Kerry Holl won the toss and elected to bat on a green wicket. Peggy Tirimanna (79) and Kate Smith (25) put on a quick 43 for the first wicket before Smith was caught allowing Lois Nethersell (35) to come to the wicket. She fell to a dubious stumping decision which bought vice captain Catherine Peatfield to the crease who scored her maiden 50 as she remained unbeaten on 69 whilst sharing a third wicket stand of 89 with Tirimanna. Holl blitzed 21 to push the end total to 283 - the highest score from the team.
Norfolk soon made the breakthough as Nethersell struck in her first over. Wickets fell at regular intervals with Louise Cadge (2-13) and Nethersell (2-21) again making the opposition play with little resistance. Wiltshire eventually were all out for 87, with extras being the highest scorer. Tirimanna got two catches behind the stumps with Holl (3-23), Peatfield (2-9) and Naomi Littlewood (1-8) chipping in with the wickets.
It was a commanding performance by the team who can boast a 100% record this season. The challenge now will see the ladies working along coach David Thomas and manager Morris Holl towards performing as well as possible against the winners of the other three division 5 regional winners. Next season will see the ECB rank counties in six divisions. The aim will be to get in as high a division as possible allowing the ladies to play a better standard of cricket. As well as the 50 over format, there will also be a Twenty20 league. All something for the squad to relish. The full scorecard is available on our play-cricket page.

Coming up for the Ladies: More and Better!

Norfolk Ladies Cricket can look forward to a fresh challenge when they travel to Taunton to play in the County Challenge Cup Finals. The 2008 season saw the team finish top of LV London and East Division 5 following convincing wins against Hertfordshire and Wiltshire, after their game with local rivals Suffolk was cancelled. The team can also boast an impressive friendly win against Leicestershire, a team that the side have struggled against in recent seasons. With a 100% record behind them, the squad are full of confidence and are relishing the opportunity to play the winners of the Midlands, South and North Division 5.
Next season will see the ECB rank counties and have divisions of six teams as opposed to four. This means more games for the team who will be looking to play at the highest standard as possible.
Over the last couple of seasons Norfolk have progressed slowly with young players pushing themselves into the side. Much credit goes to experienced Coach David Thomas, who has worked with the squad for the last few seasons and has helped the side get to the Finals. This year also saw the side recruit Morris Holl as manager.

NORFOLK LADIES AT TAUNTON

Norfolk Ladies qualified for The County Challenge Cup at Taunton after winning London and East Division 5. This meant playing the winners of the other regional division 5; Scotland, Devon and Northants. The tournament was three fifty games to be played over three days.
Due to bad weather, Norfolk failed to play the first two games against Devon and Northants - the results of which games were decided on bowl outs. Five players on each team had two attempts followed by sudden death should the games be drawn. Norfolk lost to Devon, but beat the favourites for the Challenge Cup after two successful attempts from Megan Edmonds. This left the group looking very close; Scotland 40 points, Norfolk and Devon 20 points and Northants without a point.
The last day saw a slight improvement on the weather, allowing the last two games to be reduced to twenty overs. Northants beat Devon, picking up 20 points, while Devon picked up a bonus point of 1. Playing Scotland, Norfolk were put into bat and scored 72-6 (Holl 32) on a damp and green pitch. After lunch, no play was pemitted due to bad weather, which meant the team had to compete in another bowl out. It was 2-2 (Lois Nethersell and Louise Cadge) after the first ten attempts which resulted in the tie going into sudden death, which Norfolk lost.
It was a cruel and unfortunate way to lose, but the young team will take the experience away with them as they build on the progress made during 2008 as they enter LV Division 4 next season.
Final positions: Scotland 60 points, Devon 21, Norfolk 20, Northants 20.
